Michigan Automobile Insurance Policy changes

Effective July 2, 2020, Michigan automobile insurance will offer new policy limits. If you do not change your policy, it stays as is; however, you can change it come July 2, 2020.

PERSONAL INJURY MEDICAL COVERAGE

Under these limits, this amount is the most a driver’s auto insurance company will pay per person per accident for an injured person’s expenses under PIP medical coverage.

1. Unlimited coverage;

2. Up to $500,000 in coverage;

3. Up to $250,000 in coverage;

4. Up to $250,000 in coverage with PIP medical exclusion(s);

Exclusion is available for a named insured with non-Medicare health coverage that covers auto accident injuries and/or for household members if they have health insurance that will cover auto accident injuries.

5. Up to $50,000 in coverage;

Available if the named insured is enrolled in Medicaid and their household members have another auto insurance policy or health insurance that will cover auto accident injuries.

6. PIP Medical Opt-Out;

Available if the named insured has Medicare (Parts A and B). Any of their household members must have another auto insurance policy or health insurance that will cover auto accident injuries.

BODILY INJURY COVERAGE

The new default BI/PD coverage limits are:

Up to $250,000 for a person who is hurt or killed in an accident.

Up to $500,000 for each accident if several people are hurt or killed.

Up to $10,000 for property damage in another state.

Drivers may have the option of purchasing other BI/PD coverage limits. However, the lowest limit they may purchase is:

Up to $50,000 for a person who is hurt or killed in an accident.

Up to $100,000 for each accident if several people are hurt or killed.

Up to $10,000 for property damage in another state.

UM/UIM Coverage

If you are injured in an accident caused by an uninsured driver or a driver with minimal insurance coverage, there will be no way to recover for your injuries. Adding this type of coverage to your policy allows you to recover the money you need from your own insurance and it only costs a few more dollars per month.

This coverage can help you recover for the following benefits:
